Calgary to host the 2015 World Handball Championship

The event will host athletes from more than 30 nations generating 3,000 room nights and the accompanying economic benefits.

Calgary, October 5, 2012 – The World Handball Council recently announced that Calgary has been awarded the rights to host the 2015 World Handball Championship. The Calgary Organizing Committee in collaboration with the Alberta and Canadian Handball Associations will organize, develop and present the championship as the only official World Championship sanctioned by the Council in 2015.

The World Handball Championship takes place every three years and was previously hosted in Edmonton in 2006, Portland, Oregon in 2009 and Dublin, Ireland (October 11 – 21, 2012). This will be the first time Calgary has hosted the World Handball Championship. More than 800 participants are anticipated to register and in excess of 3,000 hotel room nights will be generated as athletes, friends and their families travel to Calgary from all over Canada and the world to compete.

“We’re very pleased that the World Handball Council has selected Calgary. Attracting events like the 2015 World Handball Championship to Calgary adds tremendous value to Calgary’s $1.3 billion tourism industry and enhances our city’s international reputation as an accomplished host city for world-class events,” said Tourism Calgary president and CEO, Randy Williams. “The benefits that accompany these events are far reaching and include economic, tourism, and promotional opportunities, as well as inspiring our youth to live healthy, active lifestyles.”

The World Handball Championship is a 10-day tournament that is tentatively scheduled to take place in August, 2015. Various facilities throughout the city will be selected as host venues for the event; a list of arenas, community centres and athletic facilities will be finalized in the coming months.

Wall Handball is an amateur sport with unique historical significance. It has endured globally for centuries as a competitive sport requiring great skill and endurance. This world-class sporting event will involve both Four Wall and One Wall disciplines of the sport at all age levels and in both male and female categories.

“Hosting the 2015 World Handball Championship provides us with the opportunity to grow the sport in Alberta and in Canada” said Guy Martin, Calgary Organizing Committee Chair
