Cowichan Valley selected to host the 2018 BC Summer Games

Duncan – The Honourable Ron Cantelon, MLA for Parksville-Qualicum announced today that the Cowichan Valley has been awarded the rights to host the 2018 BC Summer Games.

“The BC Games are a fantastic way to celebrate active living in British Columbia and the economic benefits of the Games are substantial,” said Cantelon. “The people of the Cowichan Valley have a track record of coming together to host major events - as they did in 2008 for the best ever North American Indigenous Games - and I know they will embrace this opportunity in 2018. Congratulations Cowichan Valley!”

The Cowichan Valley hosted the BC Winter Games in 1991 but this is the first time the community will host the BC Summer Games.

“Community spirit is alive and well in Cowichan, and we look forward to the opportunity to host athletes and visitors from across the province of B.C., and to share with them our culture and community” stated Rob Hutchins, Chair of the Cowichan Valley Regional District. “The Cowichan Valley is blessed with a wealth of exceptional sporting venues, a multitude of enthusiastic and capable volunteers, and generous corporate sponsors who are poised and ready to again put on a first class event.”

The BC Summer Games are an important developmental milestone for B.C.’s emerging high performance athletes. Over 3900 athletes, coaches, and officials will participate in approximately 20 sports, July 19-22, 2018. The Games will be organized and staged by a community Board of Directors and 3000 volunteers.

Three other communities were announced as hosts of future BC Games in separate events today. The 2016 BC Winter Games will be held in Penticton with the 2016 BC Summer Games returning to Abbotsford and Kamloops hosting the 2018 BC Winter Games.
